What are Braces & Aligners?
Braces and aligners are orthodontic tools used to correct misaligned teeth and bite issues. Braces are fixed devices with metal or ceramic brackets and wires that gradually shift teeth into their proper position. They are commonly used for more complex dental problems, such as severe crowding, overbites, or underbites.
Aligners like Invisalign are clear, removable trays designed to fit over the teeth and move them into alignment. They are nearly invisible and more comfortable than braces but are typically recommended for mild to moderate cases.
Conditions Treated by Braces and Aligners
- Crowded Teeth: Teeth overlap or are too close together due to lack of space in the jaw.
- Overbite: The upper front teeth overlap excessively over the lower front teeth.
- Underbite: The lower front teeth extend beyond the upper front teeth.
- Open Bite: There’s space between the front or back teeth when the mouth is closed.
- Gaps (Diastema): Excessive space between teeth.
Braces vs. Aligners: Key Differences
- Visibility: Aligners are clear and virtually invisible, while braces are more noticeable, especially metal and ceramic braces.
- Removability: Aligners can be removed for eating and cleaning, whereas braces are fixed in place for the duration of treatment.
- Comfort: Aligners are generally more comfortable because they don’t have sharp edges like braces.
- Treatment Time: Treatment with braces typically lasts between 18 months and 3 years, Aligners may have a shorter treatment time.
- Cost: Aligners are generally more expensive than braces, though the price can vary depending on the treatment plan and location.
